How to get a boyfriend back?

my boyfriend broke up with me 3 weeks ago. we had dated over a year and he had even flown across an ocean to be with me. but now he says it is over because he needs to sort out his life. he told me he is still going to help me move and that he cares and wants to remain friends. i know that he isn’t seeing other girls people keep saying that the best way to get him back is to go on and not talk to him. but i am a mess. any advice?
