What age did you start transitioning over to the sippy cup?

Just curious. My son is 6 months old in a few days and I was just curious when other mommies transition over. He’s not ready right now, but just curious for the future 🙂 He is currently on the bottle. Thank you all!!

Around 9 to 12 months, depending on your baby.

Usually around 9 or 10 months is when it starts. Obviously that will vary by the child. Usually a good sign is when a baby holds his own bottle, it may be time to try it, even if it’s once a day, to see if he’ll take it. I forget exactly when my son started to hold his own, but around 9 or 10 months sounds right.

I didn’t transition my daughter until she was about 9mths old and the doctor told me I was behind schld. He said I should have started at 6 months. However, when I did take the bottle away and gave her the sippy cup she had no problems with it at all. If you will look on the upper corners of the packaging the cups and tableware come in they have an age group on them that gives you and idea on when to start, but remember every baby is different.

4 months but I would hold it for him. He is breastfed but the doctor suggested mixing rice formula with some breastmilk because he was having such loose stools for a long time, so I did that but my baby didn’t like eating from a spoon because he was so young. The sippy cup worked great and he loved drinking from it. We will still use it from time to time but I have to help him hold it as he’s only 5 months old.

This wasn’t a typical case though, it wasn’t like I was trying to transition him to a sippy cup.

My daughter was 9 months when I first started giving her water in a sippy cup. She is just under 12 months now and has a sippy cup with every meal. We’re slowly weaning her off the bottle.

My daughter was around 4 months old when I introduced the sippy cup. I would hold it for her and let her drink water out of it. She loved it! Took right to it. I got the ones with the handles and before she was 6 months old she had the hang of it. She would hold it and tip it up. She isn’t off the bottles yet, but she does get her formula out of her sippy cup as well as water and juice. She only has about 2 bottles a day and the rest out of her sippy.
Introduce it now and it probably will not be as hard to break him from the bottle. Get him used to the sippy cup. Let him play with it and he will figure out what to do with it. 🙂 Good luck!!

**Can’t believe he is almost 6 months old already!!!!

I started the sippy cup with my daughter when she started baby food/rice cereal at 4 months. I would hold the sippy & let her drink from it. She didn’t hold it herself until about 8 months. I tried to get her to start holding it around 6 months. It took her awhile to get the hang of it. It was difficult for her to understand that she needed to lift it up high & tilt it to get a drink. So be patient, he will get the hang of it. I wouldn’t put too much water in it, because it was harder for her to lift & tilt it because it would be too heavy. But you have to put enough in so he doesn’t have to lift it too high to actually get a drink out of it. The sippy I used was by Playtex “The First Sipster” made for babies 4-12 months of age. It is spill-proof, has a soft spout & handles for easy holding. It worked great! Of course I still gave her the bottle for her milk feedings until 14 months.

My son was breast fed and never really took a bottle or binkie. My doc had me introduce the sippy cup around 4 months. If they use a bottle for to long it can cause problems with their teeth and jaws.

I’ve breastfed Tanner since birth and he’s never taken the bottle well so I had my doubts about how he’d do with the sippy cup. Since I’ve got #2 on board, I wanted to start trying to transition him off the breast so that I don’t have a newborn and a toddler fighting over me!! I was concerned that he might not do so well so I started when he turned 9 months. What I did was remove the valve from the cup so that the water (that’s all I gave him — less mess) would just pour into his mouth and he’d get the idea. He’ll be 10 months next week and just in the last few days, I’ve replaced the valve and he now knows how to suck to get his water. What an amazing thing to watch your little one put two and two together and figure something out that once baffled him! 🙂 So, we started at 9 mos just experimenting and 3 or so wks later, he’s figured it out. Good luck! 🙂
