What do you think about remedies and methods to induce labor?

I’ve heard of walking and castor oil and spicy food and red raspberry leaf tea and some others. What are your thoughts/experiences, moms? Thanks!

I’ve heard that castor oil doesn’t work. I acutally did a lot of walking. It helped speed up the process and got the baby locked into place…ready to go!

The baby will come when he or she is good and ready. No need to rush things. Walking is a good idea, though, and good for your general health and mood, too.

None are proven to work. Some mothers swear that these methods do work, but there’s no way to prove that labor was going to start that day anyway – especially since many women who try these remedies are at full term (37 to 40 weeks)….or overdue!

As for red raspberry leaf tea it is NOT a labor inducer nor does it cause contractions. In fact, women have taken it safely throughout their entire pregnancy for centuries. Red raspberry leaf simply strengthen and tones the uterine lining making it work more efficiently and helping to stem bleeding after the delivery.

Oh, and my doctor told me no man has even close enough to the amount of prostaglandins in his semen that would be required to send a woman into labor, so that’s also an old wives tale! Yes, you might get contractions, but that’s a far cry from real labor.

Spicy food? Won’t work. Women in countries like Thailand and India would be going into early labor like crazy!

Castor oil? Can actually be dangerous b/c it can not only cause mom to have horrendous diarrhea/cramps/dehydration but can cause the baby to have a premature bowel movement in the womb, which leads to fetal distress. Please DON’T try this one!

Bottom line, if these methods worked, then wouldn’t they be using them in hospitals instead of pitocin?

I just need to comment on the castor oil. My friend was a week overdue and tried almost anything she read about for inducing labor. She tried castor oil and has never been in the bathroom so much in her entire life. Castor oil is a natural remedy for constipation and only a little bit goes a long way. She ended up with diarrhea like it was going out of style and felt awful. Her little girl still took a few days before she finally decided to come out. I would try it as a last resort because of the risk of diarrhea.

I am a mother of 4 and the best way to induce labor is to have sex. It really work after you are finished you have immediate contractions. But if you are not in the mood then I would recommend sitting on a big ball and slightly bouncing up and down. It helps the baby drop.

It is NEVER a goo idea to induce labor on your own. Your baby will come when he is ready to come. When the time is right, your doctor will call the shot and can induce you in a safe environment. Although, if your baby has already dropped into position and you have started pre-labor, try walking. It usually gets things going. Castor oil will just give you very bad runs (not something you want in case you go into labor soon after that) and an upset tummy. I hope this helps. Good luck!

well my mum always says that the apple only falls of the tree once its ripe

so not going to try any inducing methods!

i have been drinking raspberry leaf tea though since week 32 and after i finish a cup i always get braxton hicks so it must be doing its job of toning the uterus up

My best friend tried all the ‘old wives tales’ to bring on her third child, so when I got sick of carrying my first, I had no problem trying too!
She and I both drank cup after cup of raspberry leaf tea (I was also on the tablets from around 35 weeks – supposed to help with labour and recovery after..). We also both tried the spicy food, I rubbed lavender and clarey sage oil on my belly and the ankle pressure points, and burnt them in a burner….
I drank about a tablespoon of castor oil in orange juice one day when I thought the baby was never going to come (no signs of it happening soon anyway!) and about 4 1/2 hours later my waters broke!
My baby was born the following day, so I’m a believer in the old wives tales, as long as your baby is full term and you’ve researched any risks.
My labour came from nowhere and contractions were 4 minutes apart within an hour of it starting. It was very long with very close contractions the whole time! I don’t know if this is due to the castor oil… But I can’t say I wouldn’t do it again… In the end I just wanted the baby out!!

for me I think THEY SUCK cause none of them worked either of my 2 previous pregnancies and too early for me to try them with current pregnancy. Also I read in numerous articles and such that the Tea thing does not induce labor. The most it does is get the cervix and everything ready for labor and delivery. The sex thing didn’t work for me,neither did walking alot that only made me exhausted and still pregnant at the end of the day. I think those are just ways to entertain the expecting mother and keep her mind off of being so pregnant.
Oh and DO NOT take castor oil. My cousin took that and so did a few other people I know and all they said was that was the most horrible case of “the runs” that they have ever had and plus 50% went into labor but could not stop pooing.Castor oil is a diaretic(spelling?) other words is makes you poo A LOT! Trust me DON’T DO THAT!
