what are the best resolutions to set on a digital camera for prints?

i hear 640 x 480 camera resolution is good for online, but not for prints. what are recommended resolutions for 4×6 prints, 5×7, 8×10, etc.?

the general rule is that you want 300 ppi (pixels per inch) for the best resolution in prints. so multiply the number of inches by 300 – 4×6 would be 1200×1800 pixels, etc.

you can try printing at a lower resolution, say 200ppi….it’s up to you whether that looks good enough….

    I agree with lazy_magnet’s figures.

    But…

I try to ALWAYS take my pictures in the largest size, highest resolution possible. Why not? You might really wish you could crop the center 10% of your image into a useable print.

So I say to set your camera at the best resolution you can all the time and deal with print size later. The worst that can happen is you crop a full image to 5×7 and find you now have about 500 dpi resolution. It’s always easier to work with this kind of resolution. Just reset the resolution to your prefered setting (such as 300 dpi) before printing.

2mpx. for 4×6 and 4mpx for 8×10 for high quality prints. Nothing less!
