When did you start feeding your baby solids?

I know it should be no earlier than 6 months but mum said the recomended time when I was young was 3 months (21 yrs ago) and we all grew up fine. Did anyone start their baby earlier than six months? Thanks.

There are some developmental cues to look for- Can baby sit up almost unaided? Does she have a “pincher” grasp with her thumb and forefinger? Does she practice chewing? (My baby plays with her tongue and looks like she is chewing it!) Does she stare at your food? Does she follow your movements as you put food in your mouth? Does she grab for food off your plate? Has her “spit it out” reflex gone? (Infants are programmed to spit anything that isn’t milk back out with their tongue).

They say waiting until six months can lower the chances for food allergies and obesity. But it’s all a personal choice.

I am starting my baby on organic baby oatmeal with breastmilk and she is 18 weeks. Just a tablespoon of oatmeal with 4 tbs of breastmilk. She loves it. She doesn’t just push it back out with her tongue, she swallows most of it.

Ask your pediatrition if you are nervous about starting too early or if you are anxious to get started.

I started my baby on rice cereal at 5 1/2 months she showed signs of being hungry and an increased interest in food. I was told she could start cereal at 4 months by one doctor and 6 months by others. I wanted to wait until she was 6 months (better safe then sorry) but I feed on demand. Good Luck!! *

Watch your baby not the calendar. Look for signs of readiness ( http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/solids/solids-when.html#developmental ) and feed your baby when he lets you know he is ready and you know he is ready.

I tried at 6.5 months when my son was not quite ready and he just wasn’t interested. A month later he was ready and started eating solids like a champ.

My oldest son i started him at 2 months. And my 10 month old i started him at 4 months. It doesn’t hurt them. You know your child better then any one so dont’ let others tell you when to start them on solid foods or table food. I have been feeding my youngest table food since he was 6 months old. His doctor said its find and that what did people think we did before baby food in a jar came along?
