What happens now a days when you go out to eat at a restaurant, and you forget your wallet/card is declined?

Do they still make you wash dishes? Do they call the police?
Im just curious. Last night (Valentines Dinner) my wife and i both thought we forgot ways to pay, but i had just left my wallet in the car, so it got me thinking. My friend used to work in a fast food restaurant, he said they would some times say, “Pay us back next time” and give them food.
Any one know what places do now?

Never happen to me. I gather someone would stay behind wile the other retrieves the wallet. I am just reading the book “Gotcha Capitalism by Bob Sullivan. He writes that today credit card companies don’t deny you anymore they are happy if you go over your “LIMIT” so they can charge you over the limit fees. You are better off running home getting that wallet if you are not sure you have enough on your credit card.

Yes they still do call the police on you. But if you explain and say “hey in sorry I forgot my wallet, I’ll be back to pay you..”, the manager most of they time ask for collateral; such as cell phone, wife (lol), id, etc. And if you happen to leave you id as collateral and not come back and pay the tab they’ll usually call the cops.

Now if your a regular at a particular restaurant, the employees or management will they you ”pay us back next time”.
It all depends on management. As for what places still do this… Mostly every franchise, or corporate restaurant.

But don’t forget; if you walk-out on a check the server (in most not all places), the server usually has to be for your meal. And this person maybe paying bills late or barely paying them.

They might make a copy of your driver’s license or take some information from you if you seem like a reliable person. I worked in restaurants all through college. I saw it happen a couple of times. I don’t think the police were ever called.

If the card(s) were declined, I’d have them leave either the car keys or their wallet while they headed to the ATM down the street. No wallet? Then I’d ask their name and tell them to send me a check or come back with the money, and then I’d see the car they got into and took down the make/model and license plate number. I always got my money.

My current job and the one before would give you the meal for free. I think this would be true of all large companies. Honestly, it works for both parties. The people get a free meal, and the restaurant does something nice so the guests are more likely to return next time.
