Make a day of it! Greet her with a single rose, go to the zoo or something and give her a card, have a romantic picnic planned with home made food and have a bottle of wine & feed her strawberries that you’re dipped in chocolate, then catch a movie and slip a little bracelet or necklace on her and right before you say good by give her a small heart shaped box of chocolates. If you’re careful you should be able to get all that for your $40 and give her a nice romantic day!

It depends on your area and athletic level. A romantic walk in the snow, some gourmet hot chocolate, a book of love poems from the library, and a picnic on the living room floor, with stuff from the deli or grocery store, would be great.

A day at a museum, or rent a movie and order in, the possibilities are endless.

This is one time when it really is the thought that counts. Make up a book of romantic coupons, etc.

You can do a lot with $40 if you are creative.

Start with a homemade card. It will tell your date exactly how you feel about them, and show them you care enough to spend time rather than just buy a card at the last minute. Depending on how detailed you want, this can cost less than $5 in supplies.

A decorated candy jar. Go to your local supermarket and get a clear plastic vase with a vacuum seal lid. Add some paint to the exterior, with her name, maybe paint some roses going around the base, add some hearts, etc. Fill the jar with her favorite candy, or a popular candy. Paints, Jar and Candy can be less than $15. The candy will probably be the most expensive part.

A romantic/fun DVD. Go out and grab a DVD that both of you would be willing to watch. Also get some microwaveable popcorn. This will run you also $15 ($10 DVD, $5 popcorn).

Lastly a mix CD to give her of romantic music that you think she will like. This is essentially costless.

Put all the gifts into a cheap basket (you can usually find one for $5). You now have a homemade gift basket that ran you less than $40 that will provide hours of entertainment.
