How to break up with an overprotective boyfriend, but still stay friends?

I have been with him for 4 months and he is leaving for college. He wants to stay together because he is obsessed. I adore the kid, but do not wish to continue our relationship. How can I tell him nicely?

    Let him leave for college more than likely he will find someone new to obsess over. Just tell him you need a break, be honest, you still like him but you need to decide what you are doing in your life at the moment and need to discover this by yourself(hate it when they want to help you along). You need time and so does he- he is going away to college and new oppurtunities may come up and while you still care for him you do not want him to miss out on any college experiences.
    Just be honest, truthful- and do it in public so if he does get violent- you have help nearby

    Tell him this: “At this time, I don’t think it is a good idea for us to stay together. Certain circumstances in my life at this time make being in a relationship impossible with any person. It would just add stress to my life to try to maintain a serious relationship, and I fear that the stress would lead to the loss of you as a friend.”

    Try something along these lines, or combine it with what other people said.

    i think you should just be honest with him! he’ll most likely find someone in college anywayy, and tell him you still want to be friends.

    good luck!! (;
