I gave birth four months ago and have a really bad case of falling hair. I read that this is normal among women who have just given birth but I was wondering usually how long does this last?

I had this problem with both of my pregancies and I didn’t find out until the 2nd pregnancy that it was due to a temporary hypo-thyroid problem that sometimes occurs after giving birth. A simple blood test is needed to determine if your thyroid hormone level is normal. Talk to your doctor.

How to Treat Postpartum Hair Loss
By eHow Contributing Writer
Every one of us loses hair each day. We may not notice this normal process until we brush our hair and see a large amount of loose hair on the brush. Pregnancy hormones often slow down daily hair loss. Our bodies gradually return to normal postpartum and the hair loss resumes. Though we cannot stop this from happening, there are several ways to treat postpartum hair loss.
Step 1Continue to take your prenatal vitamins after your baby is born. This will not stop your hair loss, but it will ensure that you are getting the nutrients you need to prevent hair loss from other causes. Deficiencies in zinc, manganese and vitamin B12 can all contribute to hair loss.
Step 2Reduce the amount of stress in your life. This sounds like an impossible task for a new mother, but give it a try. Stress can play a role in losing hair. Take time to meditate and perform deep breathing exercises.
Step 3Use a shampoo and conditioner that give your hair more body if you are concerned about how your thinning hair looks. Ask your hair stylist what products she recommends to treat thinning hair.
Step 4Consider getting your hair cut in a shorter style. Postpartum hair loss is a temporary condition that usually occurs 3 to 6 months after you give birth. You may feel better with a shorter hairdo, because you will not notice the loose hairs on your hairbrush as much.
Step 5Invest in some hair extensions if short hair is not your style. Your beauty parlor or salon can let you know where to buy them if it does not provide this type of service.
Step 6Shop for a new hat, something that looks good and that you can wear while your hair returns to its former body and luster.
Step 7Make an appointment to see your doctor if your postpartum hair loss continues for more than 3 months or if your hair is falling out in large clumps rather than small bunches. You may have another condition that needs to be treated, such as impaired thyroid function…Low Thyroid is the #1 Cause For Hair Loss. (A simple blood test can determine your Thyroid Hormone Level; ask your doctor),
Tips & Warnings
Postpartum hair loss does not mean anything is wrong with you, so try not to worry about it. Concentrate on bonding with your new baby and regaining your strength after the birth.
