How did you tell your family that you were expecting?

We just found out that we are having a baby, my first doctor’s appointment isn’t until two weeks, so we decided to wait and tell everybody at Christmas. I am looking for something to do to surprise them…any ideas???

well i just called everyone and told them lol, but i think that if you get an ultrasound you can make copies of one of the pictures and put them in christmas cards for everyone and make everyone open at the same time. that would be a good surprise.

with our first child we made up a song. my husband plays the guitar. we just took a song we knew and changed the words. only took an hour or so but we still remember it til this day. with the one i am carring now, we gave my parents a 1st year birthday card and told them to return it in 20 months.

My husband and I went to tell our parents in person… I’ll be almost 4 months at Christmas… lol, so they’d see my belly (i got a small bump starting 2 weeks ago).

His parents thought we were kidding…. lol. We’re kinda silly, and so they just assumed it was a joke, after we left anf got home, they called all excited having it had time to soak in.

I told my mom and she was calmly excited, my dad about jumped up and prays for a Grandson.

We wish it was around Christmas so we were able to show up with sonograms in picture frames with “Grandkids” on it or something… but it was fun telling everyone.

I called my parents and told them I had bad news….My husband and I weren’t going to make it to the family reunion in May. Then I told them we were going to be a little busy with the new baby (due 1 week before)

On Halloween I gave my mom and dad a Halloween card that said happy Halloween grandma and grandpa. When she opened it she was confused and I said, oh, I must have given you the wrong one, open grandma’s. Then I gave my grandma a card that said Happy Halloween great-grandma. It took them a minute but they figured it out .

See if you can get the baby video taped and pop it in right there in front of your family. Even a couple of good sonogram pictures will work. I couldn’t last that long…I told everyone within a month after I found out lol. Congrats and good luck!

I will be finding out the gender right before x-mas and my parents always have a party on X-mas eve. Well, I usually hand out little stockings with goodies in them, so this year I am going to get It’s a Boy/Girl Bubble gum cigars and give them to people in their stockings… As for actually telling my parents…My mom knew I went to the doc and when she got home, I had my script for prenatals laying on the table, so when she asked how the appt went, knowing how nosy my mom is, she just picked up my script and was like what is this for?!?! You’re pregnant?!?!!!! lol, She then continued to call everyone and their mother!

We use the don’t ask don’t tell method because my father in law freaks out! But, especially announcing at Christmas here are some cute ideas:
Figure out what size your baby will be next Christmas and give someone a “Baby’s First Christmas” outfit with a note, card, etc that says to be continued Christmas 2009…

Give your mom or dad a #1 grandma/grandpa gift.

Buy an expecting christmas ornament and add it to the tree.

There are tons of other fun ideas if you just give it a bit of thought it can be magical.

we just called our parents and said “hey grandma/grandpa” and called a few of our siblings and said “aunt/uncle.” For XMas maybe you can get like some bibs or onsies that say I love my Grandma/Grandma or something like that.

Ultrasound picture in a Christmas Card, Gag books on how to be a Grandparent or Grandparents for dummies type book might be funny if you want to surprise you parents.

If this is to let everyone in the family know all at one time, then go a little crazy but not to far. First gift a diaper bag, next person small bag of diapers, next person pacifier, baby blanket, and so forth. have everyone open them at the same time, and then everyone will look up at each other holding the gifts and see who figures it out first.

How ever you decided to do it, make it as special as you can.

And in January maybe post here again on what you decided to do, and how it went.

    Have fun !!

With our first son it was Christmas when we told our family too. We bought our moms matching pregnant Willow Tree figurines. I’ve included a link to the figurine and to another that might work. Congrats and good luck!

I personally was sitting on the couch reading a newspaper, my mom was washing dishes, and she said, “So, what’s up?” I said, “I’m pregnant. The ultrasound pics are in the car if you want to see them” I’m surprised she didn’t shatter the glass she was washing. LOL.

Since it is so close to Xmas, I agree with others, do it then. I’ve always wanted to fill a box w/ baby items, blankes, diapers, etc. Wrap it up, and put to G’ma and G’pa on the name tag. It will be the last present opened b/c noone will know who to give it to. The look on their faces when they register will be priceless!!
