Is My Child Is Ready to Eat Solids?
How can you tell if your baby is ready for solids? Here are a few hints:
Is your baby’s tongue-thrust reflex gone or diminished? This reflex, which prevents infants from choking on foreign objects, also causes them to push food out of their mouths.
Can your baby support his or her own head? To eat solid food, an infant needs good head and neck control and should be able to sit up.
Is your baby interested in food? A 6-month-old baby who stares and grabs at your food at dinnertime is clearly ready for some variety in the food department.
If your doctor gives the go-ahead but your baby seems frustrated or uninterested as you’re introducing solid foods, try waiting a few days or even weeks before trying again. Since solids are only a supplement at this point, breast milk and formula will still fill your baby’s basic nutritional needs.
I think the above might help you

Hey there, have you tried mixing the rice cereal with her milk, too? Try doing that to add more to what she does drink, if she doesnt start to drink more id contact your peds.

It’s imporant for a year that your baby get most of the nutrition that they need from formula or breast milk. Solids should not be their only source of nutrition. If she is not taking to the milk, try switching formulas. There is nothing wrong with giving her the rice cereal at this age, but make sure she gets a good amount of formula in. Call the Dr. if she still refuses to drink a bottle after you switch formulas!

give her as moch as she will take. If your worried shes not getting enough, you should be mixing her rice with formula and she will be getting it from that also.

most pediatricians do not recommend this until about six months. i would always check with your pediatrician first as to what is recommended for your baby. alot of alergic reactions can be possible, usually it is safe but….as long as she is tolerating it well, try giving her some water too. sometimes they are just thirsty. also a baby will take what it feels it needs they dont like to be “over-full’
sure wish they came with instruction manuals.

She dosent sound like she is thriving very well.
You need to take her to her dr.
She should be able to drink a 6 oz bottle of formula no problem and have the rice too.
If you have her on a feeding schedule stop it and just feed her when she is hungry or cries. this may help.

its better to ask your pediatrician about it first. dont try something unless you are sure

when my daughter was 4 months, I gave her rice cereal mixed with apple juice and she loved it and it gave her some extra vitamins and fluids. That idea came from her pediatrician.

Where I live, NO solids until they are 6 months is what’s recommended. Precisely because the rice DOES take up room and they get almost no nutrition from it compared to formula/breastmilk.
Is she losing weight? Is she growing as she should? If she’s growing as she should, then there’s no problem with her only taking 5oz as in frequently as she does. Kids are notorious for going through spells of almost not eating to eating constantly. However, if she IS losing weight or not gaining and growing as she should, then she may have a medical issue and you should see the doctor.

At four months her primary source of nutrition should be formula or breast milk. Feeding cereals are mainly for practice with solid foods and to slow the digestion of the milk making baby feel fuller longer. Cereals should NEVER be given BEFORE formula as it will decrease the amount she is drinking, as you have already noticed.
A better method would be to feed her 5 oz of formula (or whatever she wants), wait 30 minutes then feed her no more than 4 tbsp of cereal. At this age cereal should not be fed more than twice a day.
As she gets older her consumption of solids will start to favor the solid foods but for now stick with formula being her main “food”.

I’d recommend asking her pediatrician if it’s okay. I gave my son baby rice when he was around 4 mos old because he just seemed to have a huge appetite and I wanted to make sure he was getting enough to eat. It made him sick and my ped told me to wait until he was around 6 mos old.

First of all you need to call the pediatrician to make sure that she is ok. You can feed her rice, but you need to make it very runny so she wont gag.
If you feel that she is dehydrated give her water- or pediasure for infants to get her electrolytes back in order. BUT ALWAYS CHECK WITH HER PEDIATRICIAN. She may be teething, gassy or getting sick.

My first question is: Why do you want to give her rice? Does she have a problem that you are trying to treat? Like acid reflux, or not sleeping much at night?
I ask this, because if you are just trying to give her something thicker for the heck of it, think again….Rice has very little nutritive value….(at least not as much as the formula)…the rice will fill her up, and she won’t be hungry for the nutritious formula.
In addition, putting more than 1T of rice in every 2oz of prepared formula/breastmilk could cause severe vomiting. Never use more than 1T dry rice cereal in every 2oz prepared formula.
As for the timing, I HAD to give my daughter rice cereal starting at 6 WEEKS, because she had terrible acid reflux, but that was on doctors’ instructions.
Rice cereal is also responsible for causing CONSTIPATION.
My recommendation? If she doesn’t NEED the rice, don’t give it to her.

KEEP IN MIND: The MOST IMPORTANT thing for your baby to be getting now is the formula, not the rice cereal.
I hope you are talking about rice cereal. If you are, then mix it with a scoop (2 oz.) of formula.
call your doctor for help.

Hello?
“Help please, scared that she is not getting enough fluids in, thats whe I started with the rice.”
*Rice is not a fluid
*Adding non-milk feeds before 6 months generally reduces milk consumption
*Milk consumption has decreased significantly after you added rice cereal
WHY ARE YOU GIVING HER RICE CEREAL? She isn’t ready, she wasn’t drinking enough formula before you started the cereal and now she is drinking even less.
