At what age do children start to have bad dreams?

My son is 9 1/2 months and woke up from a nap yesterday seeming very confused and upset. He even cried with real tears, which is unuaual for him. Is this too early for a bad dream?

Children have bad dreams right for the very beggining, it’s only at between 12-18 months that they start to remember them.

However, it sounds likely that this was the cause for your son’s upset. It’s horrible isn’t it? Just try and reassure him when he wakes and tell him that you are there and it was only a dream.

My son is 21 months and has bad dreams about once a week. It’s horrible, but he is quickly reassured when I hug him and lie with him for a bit.

    Good Luck

They start to have bad dreams since they were born and you don’t know. But most likely it is whenever. It isn’t unusual for him. That is pretty good because he is thinking. And it is perfectly fine to cry about a at that age. Maybe he was scared and he woke up and still remembered it. Just give him water,and/or something to eat and calm him down. If it continues very often, then talk to him if he can speak and ask him what is wrong. Try letting him sleep with you if it continues often.

i think they always can have nightmares, because form when they born they have fears, for example, some baby don’t like clowns and then they start to cry, but if they see much clowns very often, even if they are babies, with their little knowledge about the world they can make some kind of ghost in their dreams that may look like clowns, and then they have a nightmare

My daughter is 9 months old and has been having nightmares since she was 7 months old. She wakes up and makes the most horrifying cry you’ve ever heard. The only thing I can do is to hold her and tell her that everything is okay. She eventually calms down.
